GREENO2 INFO DAY PROMOTES GREEN ROOFS, ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP IN KYIV

On 28 March 2026, an Info Day of the Erasmus+ GREENO2 project – “Green Roofs in Higher Education Institutions as Sustainable Centers for Research, Participation, Environmental Awareness and O2 Generation” was held as part of the Open Day of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

The event provided an opportunity for prospective and current students, academic staff and visitors to learn more about the GREENO2 project, its objectives and its contribution to sustainable higher education and environmental awareness.

A key focus of the Info Day was the role of green roofs as innovative green infrastructure in urban higher education institutions. GREENO2 promotes green roofs not only as nature-based solutions that can contribute to climate adaptation, biodiversity, cleaner air and sustainable water management, but also as educational and participatory spaces that can encourage environmental consciousness and active engagement within academic communities.

The project reflects the broader priorities of the European Green Deal, which recognizes the important role of universities in engaging students and wider communities in the transition towards climate neutrality and a more sustainable future. GREENO2 also contributes to the objectives of European climate adaptation and biodiversity policies by promoting greener urban environments and greater access to green spaces.

The Info Day also highlighted the project’s commitment to common European values, civic engagement and participation. Through learning and collaborative activities, GREENO2 creates opportunities for students and academic staff to develop social competences, critical thinking and environmental awareness while becoming more actively involved in addressing sustainability challenges.

For Ukraine, such initiatives are particularly significant in the context of the ongoing war. International educational projects such as GREENO2 contribute to maintaining academic and research capacity, strengthening international cooperation and supporting the continued integration of Ukrainian higher education into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

By connecting education, green infrastructure, environmental awareness and civic participation, the GREENO2 Info Day demonstrated how universities can become important drivers of sustainable transformation and contribute to creating greener, healthier and more resilient urban communities.
