GREENO2 MULTIPLIER EVENT IN KYIV EXPLORES GREEN ROOFS AS SPACES FOR SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH AND COMMUNICATION
On 16 April 2026, a Multiplier Event of the Erasmus+ GREENO2 project – “Green Roofs in Higher Education Institutions as Sustainable Centers for Research, Participation, Environmental Awareness and O2 Generation” was held as part of the Days of Science 2026 at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
The event brought together members of the academic, research and media communities to discuss the potential of green roofs as innovative spaces for environmental education, research, communication and active participation in higher education.
A central part of the event was the roundtable “Green Roofs at Universities as Spaces for Sustainable Research and Communication”, organized within the VIII International Scientific and Practical Conference “Current Issues of the Media Space.” The roundtable generated considerable interest among researchers, educators and media professionals, providing a platform for discussion of the environmental, educational and communicative dimensions of university green infrastructure.
The GREENO2 partnership contributed to the conference programme with the scientific paper “GREENO2 Project and Participatory Management of University Green Roofs: Ecological Infrastructure, Collaborative Practices, and Sustainability Communication,” included in the conference Book of Abstracts.
The contribution explored green roofs not simply as technical solutions for improving environmental performance, but as socio-ecological and educational spaces that can support research, learning, well-being, communication and active participation of the academic community.
Particular attention was given to the concept of participatory management. The GREENO2 approach emphasizes that the success of university green infrastructure depends not only on its physical design, but also on the involvement of students, academic and administrative staff and other stakeholders in shared responsibility, stewardship and collaborative decision-making.
The discussion also highlighted the potential of university green roofs to function as living laboratories, where applied research, experiential learning, environmental education and student participation can come together. In this context, green roofs can help strengthen environmental awareness while making sustainability visible and directly connected to everyday university life.
The event presented the broader objectives of GREENO2, including:
- promoting green roofs as spaces for environmental protection, participation and well-being in higher education;
- supporting environmental education through MOOCs and digital learning resources available through the EduOpen platform;
- encouraging universities to develop green roofs as spaces for research, learning, environmental awareness and recreation;
- strengthening the role of academic communities in the ecological transition and climate resilience of cities.
The GREENO2 project demonstrates how ecological infrastructure, education and communication can reinforce one another. By transforming university rooftops into multifunctional green spaces, the project seeks to create environments where sustainability is not only studied but also experienced and communicated.
The Multiplier Event was part of the annual Days of Science at the Institute of Journalism, a major academic event bringing together experienced researchers, media professionals and young scholars to discuss contemporary challenges in the information and communication space. The 2026 edition once again demonstrated the Institute’s role as a platform for intellectual exchange where academic research, innovative technologies and contemporary societal challenges intersect.
Through the Kyiv Multiplier Event, GREENO2 further contributed to the dissemination of knowledge, stakeholder engagement and dialogue on sustainable higher education, while strengthening connections between environmental research, communication and the wider academic community.
